Seeds & Growing

Are your seeds heirloom and open-pollinated?
Yes. All of our seeds are heirloom varieties, and they are open-pollinated. This means you can save seeds from year to year and maintain the integrity of the plants. Many are culturally significant varieties, selected for biodiversity, resilience, and seed-saving potential.

Do you sell GMO seeds?

No. We never sell genetically modified (GMO) seeds or hybrid varieties. Every seed we offer is naturally grown, seed-saver friendly, and free of chemical treatment.

What’s included in your seed sets?

Each set or guild includes a hand-selected group of seeds designed to work well together based on principles of natural farming, companion planting, polyculture, permaculture, and ecological design. Product pages list every included variety, along with structure and spacing notes.

Can I buy individual seed packs?

We do sell individual seed packs, but our primary focus is on curated sets that promote diversity, balance, and cooperation in the garden. Singles are always available, but our bundles are designed to make polyculture easy and accessible.

Are your seeds certified organic?

Some of our seeds are grown using organic practices, but not all are certified. We prioritize ethical sourcing, soil health, and cultural integrity in our partnerships—even when certification isn’t present.

I’m new to gardening—can I use your seeds?

Absolutely. Our sets are designed with beginners in mind—intuitive, forgiving, and low-maintenance. Each combination supports healthy soil and resilient plant communities, making it easy to start small, grow at your own pace, and build confidence along the way.

Gardening on Easy Mode

Do you include growing instructions?
Yes. Each seed packet is labeled, and we provide companion planting tips, seasonal advice, and links to deeper resources on our site.

Resources

Where can I grow these seeds?

Our seeds are selected for resilience across most U.S. regions, especially in warm and subtropical climates. Many sets thrive in the Southeast and beyond. For cooler climates, some sets may need adjusted timing or protection. We include guidance and resources to help you adapt successfully.

Seed Quality & Handling

How should I store my seeds to maintain viability?

Store seeds in a cool, dry, and dark place. A sealed container in a pantry, cabinet, or drawer away from moisture and direct sunlight works well. Avoid heat and humidity to preserve germination rates over time.

What is the shelf life or “best by” timeline for your seeds?

Most of our seeds will remain viable for 1–3 years or more if stored properly. Longevity varies by crop type—some (like lettuce or carrots) have shorter lifespans, while others (like beans and corn) store exceptionally well. We include pack dates and lot info to help you track freshness.

Do you test germination rates?

Yes. We verify seed quality through reliable suppliers and conduct spot germination tests when needed. Every variety we offer meets high standards for viability and vigor.

How do I read or track the lot number on my seed packet?

Each packet is labeled with a lot number that links back to our internal seed tracking system. This helps us maintain quality and traceability across batches. If you have questions about a specific lot, feel free to reach out.

What happens if a seed doesn’t sprout or seems damaged?

While we stand behind the quality of every seed we pack, nature can be unpredictable. If you experience issues like low germination or damaged seeds, contact us within 7 days of delivery. While we don’t offer refunds, we’re happy to provide guidance and support to help you troubleshoot and grow successfully.

Cultural & Community Values

What do you mean by “culturally significant seeds”?

Culturally significant seeds are varieties that carry meaning beyond the food they produce. They’re tied to identity, place, ceremony, language, and tradition. Some may have been grown by a specific community for generations; others represent resilience, migration, or survival. These seeds are living history—and we treat them with the care and context they deserve.

Why do you offer culturally significant seeds?

Seeds carry more than genetics. They carry memory, wisdom, and identity. We offer culturally significant seeds to help preserve and uplift the food traditions that have shaped communities for generations. These seeds support resilience, belonging, and sovereignty, especially for those reconnecting with ancestral practices or protecting what remains. By making them accessible, we hope to honor their origins while empowering growers to plant with meaning and purpose.

How do you source and steward Indigenous and heritage varieties?

We approach these seeds with respect and responsibility. Some are grown in-house; others are sourced from ethical suppliers, community initiatives, or growers who share our values. We do not rename or repackage culturally significant seeds in a way that erases their origins. Whenever possible, we share background and context so growers can understand the story behind what they plant.

I know of a culturally important variety that you don’t offer. Can I share it with you?

Yes! Please do. We are always looking to respectfully expand the collection and honor more traditions. If you grow, steward, or know of a seed variety with cultural or historical significance, we would love to hear from you. Contact us to start the conversation.

What is food sovereignty, and why does it matter here?

Food sovereignty is the right of people and communities to define their own food systems—what they grow, how they grow it, and who it feeds. It’s about more than access to food; it’s about reclaiming control, honoring cultural traditions, and protecting the land that sustains us. It emphasizes local leadership, ecological care, and cultural relevance.

At Dog Drum Seed Supply, food sovereignty is a core value. By offering culturally significant, biodiverse seeds, we aim to support community resilience, reconnect growers to heritage, and make it easier to grow with intention and purpose.

What’s the difference between food security and food sovereignty?

Food security means having enough to eat. Food sovereignty goes further. It is about having the power to choose what you eat, how it is grown, and by whom. You can be food secure without being food sovereign, but meaningful food justice requires both access and autonomy.

Can tribal organizations apply for discounted or tax-exempt seed purchases?

Yes. We support Indigenous communities, food sovereignty initiatives, and cultural projects through our Community Partnership Program. Tribal governments, schools, and nonprofits can apply for discounted and tax-exempt seed orders using our simple online form. We'll review your submission and respond with next steps.

Community Partnership Application

Do you collaborate with community gardens or mutual aid groups?

Yes. We work with many kinds of organizations: schools, community gardens, mutual aid groups, neighborhood networks, and more. If you are growing for the good of others, we are here to support your work. Apply through our Community Partnerships page to request discounted seed sets or to start a collaboration.

How do I apply for your Community Partnership Program?

You can apply through our Community Partnerships page by completing a short form with your relevant details about your organization. We welcome requests from schools, tribal programs, nonprofit gardens, mutual aid efforts, and other community-driven initiatives.

To qualify for tax exemption or discounted pricing, we may ask for documentation such as a 501(c)(3) letter, a tribal government designation, or a state-issued exemption certificate. If you're unsure whether your group qualifies, we encourage you to apply anyway! We review each request individually and are happy to work with you to find the right fit.

Our team typically responds within a few business days with next steps.

Subscriptions & Preorders

Can I preorder seed bundles for future planting seasons?

Preordering helps us pack efficiently and prioritize growers who want to reserve specific varieties. To stay informed about preorder openings, join our email list or subscribe to a seasonal plan.

Jump to email submission form

Do you offer seasonal or annual seed subscriptions?

Yes! We offer seasonal and annual subscription options designed to keep your garden diverse, inspired, and in rhythm with the planting year. Each shipment includes thoughtfully curated seeds selected for the season, plus guidance and occasional surprises. Subscriptions make it easy to stay growing without the guesswork.

Can I pause, skip, or cancel a subscription?

Yes. You can manage your subscriptions anytime through your account dashboard. You’re free to pause, skip a season, or cancel before your next billing cycle—no hassle.

To keep things fair and rooted in trust, we may delay your first shipment if a subscription is canceled immediately after checkout. We’re a small, grower-run business that operates on good faith; we believe in reciprocity, not loopholes. Subscriptions are flexible by design, and we trust our community to grow with us as responsible, like-minded plant people who value intention, not extraction.

Can I choose what’s included in a subscription?

At this time, subscriptions are curated by our team and not customizable. This allows us to design balanced sets that thrive together while keeping things affordable and cohesive.

If you want a unique, personalized experience without full control, we recommend subscribing to the Mega Mystery Pack. It embraces the beauty of the unknown, and the joyful nature of real-life growing. Each delivery is one-of-a-kind, hand-selected with care and intention.

Looking for something very specific? Just email us a list of the varieties or themes you have in mind. We'll take that vision and turn it into a real, thriving garden designed just for you! No confusing menus or algorithms. Just thoughtful selection, human connection, and satisfaction guaranteed.

Packaging & Sustainability

Is your seed packaging recyclable or compostable?

The seed envelopes themselves are not compostable and may not be accepted in standard curbside recycling. However, they’re made to be reused again and again—ideal for saving your own seeds, organizing your garden, or sharing with others. By choosing long-lasting, resealable packaging, we reduce the need for disposable materials and help you keep your seeds safe and sorted season after season.

We encourage growers to reuse their packets, save seed when possible, and treat every envelope like part of the growing cycle—not the waste stream.

How are your seeds packaged?

Our seeds are hand-packed in durable, resealable mylar foil envelopes to maintain freshness and extend shelf life. Each packet is clearly labeled with the seed name, lot number, and growing category. Seed sets are grouped in minimal, recyclable wrapping for easy sorting. Everything is packed with care—by hand, in-house.

Grower Community

How do I join the Grower Map or connect with other growers?

Our Grower Map is currently in development and will be public after it is ready to sprout. Once ready, it will showcase gardeners, community leaders, and planting projects from across the country: highlighting how seeds connect us across space and culture.

In the meantime, you’re welcome to submit your interest in being added to the map or featured in a spotlight by contacting us at grow@dogdrumenterprises.com. We’d love to know what you’re growing, where you’re rooted, and how our seeds are taking shape in your soil.

We encourage all growers to engage with their local community—by sharing seeds, starting conversations, or planting with neighbors. We’re here to support that with seed bundles, resources, and shared knowledge. The Grower Map will serve as a way to connect these local actions into a wider web of relationship, resilience, and regeneration.

If you're part of a community garden, school, tribal initiative, or mutual aid project, you can also explore deeper partnership opportunities by emailing us at partners@dogdrumenterprises.com.

Can my organization sponsor or fund seeds for another group or community?

Yes! If you're a grant maker, funder, or organization looking to support a garden or growing program outside your own, we would love to work with you. We can help identify high-impact placements for seeds and coordinate fulfillment.

Email us to discuss custom arrangements or giving-focused collaborations.

I'm interested in a mutual business partnership. Do you offer that?

We are open to working with aligned businesses, growers, designers, or educators on mutually beneficial projects. This could include product collabs, service exchanges, affiliate partnerships, or something unique.
